Very good article, you raise some very interesting questions and illustrate many issues within this industry that need to be addressed. It is a shame that touts have such control over this market and fans are subjugated to their every whim. It is a capitalistic ideal, that demand will ultimately set the price and their is nothing inately wrong with that but the current state of the market shows the need for change. Government regulation is a possibility but how do you control demand for a popular event and how do you administer law enforcement on scalping it can happen anywhere at anytime. I have noticed many new models coming out in the ticket world recently and I think these "verticals" or comparison sites are the way to alleviate the issues facing the ticket market. The comparisons aggregate primary and secondary seller's tickets all in one site so you can view and compare prices from all the sellers. This idea really brings ticket sales out of the back alley and creates transparency to the space which means there is no way broker a. is going to sell his ticket for $110 when broker b. is selling the same ticket for $100 because the consumer can now easily see and compare prices instead of just going to one broker hoping they were getting the best price. The idea with these models is to provide transparency for consumers therefore encourage competition among sellers which will drive prices down.I think this is the model of the future and is the way to create legitimate, honest market structure.

Thanks for the comments guys!

Bob, outright restricting sale of tickets by touts isn't helpful, what I suggested was that the prices were regulated so that fans weren't ripped off.

But yeah, fans simply shouldn't give in to the ridiculous prices that touts set online. However that's an ideal world so not likely to happen.

Nice photo, where did you crop it from? :P I don't see a creative commons logo near my photos :P hehe.

Anyway, the problem about touts is that people are simply willing to be exploited, people don't mind forking out ridiculous amounts of money if it was to see their favourite band play, and when there are people like these, there will be people who will exploit them, and if the first tout had a change of heart and stopped doing it, there'll always be a second one. It pains me to accept this but this is reality. Exploitation happens all the time, you just need to make people around you feel less obliged to go that route.

Preventing them from selling it will only make them find another way of selling them. It's the same with online piracy, it's simply a cat and mouse game. People should simply focus on not being so vulnerable and then these people won't be about. If you're willing to pay more than face value, someone is willing to buy one and sell it to you.

Hej stu biatch. Nice design matey, tho the blue outline rollovers on all the images is a bit harsh. Also why in this text box there's a massive gap to the side there <---- Seriously try typing in the main msg of the comment forms and you'd see. it's very strange and annoying, like a margin. Unless you've noticed this and can't be arsed to fix it ;)

PS. drop shadow on the rss "subscribe" bit along with the slightly angled rss feed icon is a bit cheesy ;)

pps. Though seriously cool work.

I know, certain films I can understand being remade...I can even deal with them remaking the Harry Potter series in 50 years time. But the Breakfast Club is a classic and really was subject of it's time which is why this new version is going to be extremely shit. Especially since it's set in a bloody airport as opposed to a school.
